Funny you should ask. I defo have the problems, and had the colonoscopy today. Conclusion before biopsy results is; probably IBS.

I actually had started thinking maybe IBD was the cause of my joint pains. I'm back in the fold as undiagnosed seronegative check all the boxes for AS, but not the blood test, and no fusion.

Grrrrrrrrrr...I cant begin to say how annoying and frustrating and tiring and exhaustive it is not just to struggle with the huge pains, but also have to fight to be believed I even have them.

You should, the colonoscopy is a hoot; first you get to drink unhealthy amounts of water (3L+ per day) for 5 days, with limitations on what you can eat. Then the day before you cant eat at all, but you do get to drink welltasting laxatives twice during the day and to compensate for the dehydration you get to double the amount of water + 4 glasses of water and the 2 glasses of laxatives and another 1L at the end of the day.

Then when the day arrives, the doctor boldly goes where no man has gone before, you can actually feel the entire tube travel your entire Colon, but not before he has said: "Looks like your Colon has an extra loop, I have to straighten that out to get the cam on further. With some twisting and turning he actually manages to straighten it, and on we go. When he reaches your illeum, he will decide he wants about 12 biosamples, wich he can happily inform you you wont notice. Wich is great, because at the same time he inserts a long metal thingy into the tube, you can see it appear on the cam (Did I mention you get it all right in the face in a stunning HD-quality, on a monitor?) as a claw that gets a good grip on the inside skin of your colon, then he proceeds to yank hard on the steel wire thingy, and yeah; You can feel that laugh 12 times....

It's awesome, give it a shot, I'll bet you love it! laugh

I had Ulcerative Colitis right before diagnosed with A.S. at the age of 28 but it went into remission after four years of being on Sulphasalazine. I still at the age of 54 been blessed to stay in remission from Colitis.

Gilth,
You need a new G.I. dr. hon. I have had the same G.I. Dr. for 17 years. He is a keeper. He makes it so I don't feel a thing. Nada enchilada. I watch the whole procedure but have no stress going in because he takes such good care of me. I have them every two years because apparently I am a polyp farmer.

The prep is the worst. I just basically fast for a few days and eat very little before the prep so it's not so bad. I get all of my reading material and computer and set up the bathroom and make it toasty warm and spa like so it isn't so unpleasant. Some of the stuff you drink now has many more flavors. I like the cherry. Drink it very cold too and fast. Then I feel so cleannnnn!

gastritis and IBS......

when the gastritis flares, i get the loose undigested bowel issue, don't digest my food properly, don't absorb my nutrients at that time.

but more recently, last few years, as the flare starts, i get really constipated. thats now a major red flag that i'm starting to flare.

had the colonoscopy into my ileum. inflammation and small crohn's like ulcers in my ileum.

read that was a good dx marker for spondy, if not on nsaids, which can also cause those symptoms.

i wasn't on nsaids, so it was from spondy. helped immensely in finally getting the dx for undiff spondy.

some day i hope they'll realize inflammation of the stomach is symptomatic too.

anyway, glith, yes, i agree the prep sucked! no two ways about it.
but the procedure, i agree with pea.
my GI doc is wonderful.
i wasn't sure how we'd deal with the drugs for "putting me out" as i'm on LDN
and the standard ones are contraindicated.
not to worry, he told them i needed to be on propofol.
it put me right out so i didn't feel a thing.

If you were that aware, I'm sorry. My doc knocked me out and I remember nothing.

As for the question, if by "IBS", you mean irritable bowel syndrome, then yes, I have symptoms. But colonoscopy was normal. No inflammatory issues.

a lot of you guys have had the endoscopy.....do you think that it is a necessary procedure considering that IBS and AS go hand in hand?

IBD and AS also go hand in hand.

so a colonoscopy to rule out UC or an endoscopy to rule out Crohn's is a good thing if your doctor recommends it.
