So, my husband and I are a few months into the No Starch Diet for AS (going great, by the way) and a stomach bug has made it through my office to me. Boo. All the comfort foods I would have eaten in the past (soda crackers, toast, chicken noodle soup, cream of wheat, etc) are packed full of starch. Anyone have suggestions on what you eat when you get a case of the yuck while on the NSD?

Hey, AlbinoZombie:

Glad that You and Your husband have found some positive results using NSD.

Sometimes I mix some Hershey's tiny morsels in with my almonds and raisins; that is a combination which really blows down those blues (thanks to Harrison's song "Savoy Truffle").

Sometimes I can find that terribly sweet meringue crunchy cookie in stores, but coconut macaroons might also suffice.

But there are many other foods that are not so sweet that can be real treats--like pepitas and green olives, and also lychee fruit in cans (Asian markets often have this). Even ice cream, properly made, can be nice but the dairy can be killer. So I have found some sorbet on occasion--but just too addictive--lime or lemon juices mixed with eggwhites and sugar frozen and beaten during freezing process. Helps a sore throat, too.

Tofu ice cream is not that good, but perhaps worth a try. Some health food stores offer it. I once bought some stuff (before NSD) called "ice-bean" and it was so awful that I had to throw out 80% of it--the concept was good...

Good Luck getting over the bug--it is never fun, but sometimes these things seem to distract our immune systems and our AS lets up; You husband have it and feeling a little "extra-better?"

HEALTH,
John

Mostly homemade chicken soup, turkey soup; also homemade jello (made from plain gelatin, natural fruit flavorings instead of artificial, stevia and/or sugar to taste).
