X-Ray Radiation Exposure May Be Greater For Patients With Digestive Disorders

(snip...) "Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and other gastrointestinal (GI) disorders may be exposed to significant doses of diagnostic radiation, according to a new study in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, the official journal of the American Gastroenterological Association.

"Our results show that significant increases in radiation exposure in the last decade have paralleled the increased use of computed tomography imaging," said Alan N. Desmond, MB, BMedSc, MRCPI, of the Cork University Hospital, Ireland, and lead author of this study. "While cumulative exposure is highest in patients with Crohn's disease, high exposure may also occur in patients with other gastrointestinal disorders." (more...)

Thats an interesting bit for that works with X-ray. Here's another one for the brainwrestlers: Soft tissue (and particularly those that contribute to blood production) is partiularly voulnerable to radiation. I wonder if inflamed tissue is more susceptible than healthy tissue, I bet few studies have been done on that particular one. Logic teels me no, but radiation is two-fold. It affects your genes, but it also gives you internal end external burns.

There was another interesting one on dental rad exposure and brain and danger of brain tumours!

Lovely...

Dentists over here don't have their own rad equipment, seems one has to go to the local rad clinic. All passing strange. And, at yr first dental appt over here, you are expected to turn up with a complete dental 'round' radiograph. It's all a bit caveman like... Also, they use a lot of dental amalgam - i.e. mercury fillings. Frightful. At the spondy meetings, most of the spondys have mouths filled with these ghastly mercury amalgam fillings - of course, the rheumies don't take a blind bit of notice. Shrug shoulders, and ignore. Sheesh. (It really is Neanderthal! Shudder).
