After 60 days of nonstop flare after my 5-day starch binge, I finally woke up one Sunday and noticed that there was a dramatic decrease in my pain and I was able to move like a normal person. I was over the moon that FINALLY, I was done paying for my starch binge.

Sadly, that happiness was short-lived as two days later, I was back in full flare. Reviewing my food diary, there are only two things new: Stevia and avocado. I read in this forum that Stevia is safe but I checked the ingredients in mine (Stevia in the raw) and found dextrose. Is dextrose safe? I also read that avocado can cause reactions in some but I did test mine and they're locally grown and in season so it's highly unlikely.

Need your inputs. Help!

acording to NSD principles, yes, dextrose is safe. but i would not go 10 meters near it...

I am so sorry you are flaring again! Ugh!! I am an iodine tester myself...Did you test with iodine? I know some people can have issues with even things that don't test starchy though.

Stevia in it's natural form should be fine, unless it is the mass-produced pre-packaged stuff where they put additives like dextrose. I don't mess with dextrose, so I wouldn't have eaten it. That could have been the culprit.

Avocados in my area never have tested starchy and therefore I never have problems.

If I were you, I'd do a dinner to dinner (24 hour) fast. Good luck!

I've been using Stevia also. I'm not sure now. I'm in a little flare but this happened because I ate milk chocolate for 4 days in a row: I was pretty busy and didn't have time to eat properly and needed energy to keep going, so I did it and it bothered it me a bit but in the four day I got a full flare. Apparently the NSD diet is pretty much like saving money in the bank.

I had been eating dark chocolate I made with stevia with no problems, but I just bought a different brand name and I did remember that I read it contained a few other ingredients. I will update on this later.

I never have a problem with avocados, they are great for me.

So it might be the Stevia...

Yes I did test with iodine and the avocados were safe. I also read online that they contain zero fats as they're practically all fats.

I did a bit of research on dextrose and it turns out they are starch-derived. Could be the culprit.

It normally takes me 3 days of strict NSD to recover from a single offending food so I'll wait it out and see.

Thanks.

Pure dextrose is just another name for glucose, the most easily digested sugar of all.

So unless the dextrose is impure (some percentage was really more complex carbs) or you have a sensitivity to sugar, I vote the avocado more likely to be at fault. There are very mixed results with them, at least as many people report bad results as good. The people who couldn't handle them includes NSD experts such as Dotyisle, so it wasn't merely a matter of not enough diligence in testing the avocados. The explanation I heard was that the small amount of starch found in avocados is a particularly slow-to-digest type of starch.

"The problem with the dextrose and fructose which is being sold as a granulated form as well as the dextrose contained in commercial products is that it is not pure dextrose which should be the same as the single sugar glucose found in fruits and honey.

However, since it is made commercially from cornstarch, the product turns out to be a mixture of many sugars: short chain polysaccharides and trisaccharides and disaccharides. However, it is still being labeled as dextrose."

So I guess we conclude that it could be either one, and Kristin would need to try each in isolation to find the culprit

kristinego,

I'm not sure what is available in your part of the world, but I use a stevia extract from KAL. Nothing else added to it, although they also sell a garbage (from a starch perspective) one that contains fiber. I have seen quite some product reviews from parts of Asia on iherb. If you can't find something suitable locally, perhaps you can order it from that retailer.
