I'm another one who has more problems with low acid than too much, and I am sure it contributes to reflux as well (though not acid reflux). I find I often have to add extra acid foods into my diet in order to get good digestion - things like having a lemon juice and ginger drink in the morning, splashing balsamic vinegar over salads rather than dressing, and adding pickles to all sorts of meals. Any of the PPIs cause me no end of problems, though I do sometimes take gaviscon or ranitidine when reflux is bad - though I'm not convinced it actually helps.

I think people are too focused on GERD which is merely a relaxating of the valve in the esophagous. I know in my case i have low stomach acid, there is a test for it actually but being a type A blood it's a good indication I have it.

What happens is undigested food gets through our "gut" and creates bacteria. The immmune system attacks it creating the hyperactive state. If we are prone to arthritis we start to flare. The liver, which is the most important organ in the body, has to work very hard and stop all it's functions when this occurs. Hence the fatigue and other symptoms/problems we start to incur.
so by taking antacids for "GERD" we lessen the ability of the stomach to break the foods down that we eat.
In terms of being sugar free, I'm just covering the possiblity of feeding yeast overgrowth. I know someone wrote they get "uncomfortable" with being off sugar. Yes we are addicted to it and sugar has zero benefit to our body. In fact without it we may uncover how our body is truely functioning. It takes two weeks for sugar to leave our body and it's not a pleasant two weeks. The liver thanks you very much for not eating the sugar and it's part of cleansing your liver after years of abusing it through having in my case low stomach acid and making the liver work real hard.
It was really tough the first week only eating once a day. I green juice three times a day and waking up in the morning and drinking a concoction of kale, squash, cucumber, spinach, and beets with a few pinneaple chunks was not my idea of a good breakfast:). But I'm going to go through with it.
At the same time I had 19 vials of blood taken and will find out in a couple of weeks what all the test results are (tested for metals in my body, adrenals etc.)
I'm determined to finally "heal the gut" and find out if this works for my AS. I'm not willing to take any drug outside of TNF's which have failed for me after years of great success.

BTW I might have implied NSAIDS produce lower stomach acid which I'm not sure is true. It's just if you want to heal the gut you obviously cannot take them.

And as for my one meal a day I just make sure it's gluten free, sugar free and has not too much dairy.

19 vials of blood, they will find something for sure! I feel best being sugar free, I think I need to do that again, before I had arthritis I quite sugar for a year after reading a book called "Sugar Blues". I was a teenager and wanted to get healthy, and I never felt better. I started eating sugar again because I wanted to be more normal and not so wacky, it probably would have benefited me to stick with it.

Let us know how your bloodwork comes back, I am interested. Take care.
