Cheers All,

Does anyone know if Chia seeds have starch in them? They sound really healthy so I want to know if they are excluded or not.

R

Hello, R:

Sprouted chia is not starchy, but I don't know about the seeds as they have been used typically unsprouted. Perhaps we need to perform some tests by grinding up and using the iodine. Typically seeds of this nature have very little starch and are mostly cellulose.

If You do this first, please let us know results,

HEALTH,
John

I have some chia seeds I haven't used them yet so can't speak from experience eating wise but I have just tried testing them. I don't know if I have done enough to test them as they were too fine to grind in my grinder. There was some dust after attempting to grind them so I just put the lot in a small dish, added some water to them and iodine. There was no change and it was weird how the seeds absorbed the water and went gel like.

I also put iodine on the 'dust' caught in the seal on the grinder and this appeared to stay the same too. Let me know if this wasn't a good enough test and what I should do better and I will try again.

I have tested the seeds and they do not react to iodine. I also tested hemp hearts...negitve as well.

Hi guys,
I've just searched for "chia seeds" and found this post as I was wondering the same thing. I have also tried crushing them and testing them and couldn't see any reaction to the iodine. They look like freaky frog's eggs when they go into liquid! But I've been enjoying them with yoghurt lately, they add a nice crunch a bit like cereal with yoghurt smile
Sweet as... smile
