StephenD New_Member Registered: 02/15/12 Posts: 2	I have to have my thyroid removed because it is enlarged and possibly cancerous. This type of cancer, if it is that, is slow to develop. I mention that because my surgeon who would remove the thyroid says my neck is fused so far forward and the mass is so large that it would be safer to first have surgery to straighten out my neck,and then, after it has healed or partially healed, to have the thyroid removed. The alternative might involve him cutting through the sternum. Has anyone here had such surgery, and if so could you comment? I have lived with AS for all my adult life, will be 62 this year. I once met someone with AS who had undergone the surgery,and he recommended it to me.

I have a goitor as well and just had some new M.R.I.s taken today so I am wondering the exact same thing. I have known a few people who have had their goitor's taken out and did alright. Kancie Third_Degree_AS_Kicker Registered: 11/30/11 Posts: 256	also no experience with, but hoping it will work for you, and that you will be feeling better than ever. _________________________ Iritis first diagnosed in 1991, presently recurrent and steroid resistant. Tested HLA B27 positive in 1996. AS diagnosed October of 2011. Putting most of my eggs in the NSD and exercise basket, using only TENS, massage, heat and ice, and NSAIDS (sparingly) for pain. Drops for iritis as flare necessitates. Looking back I feel I would have been diagnosed with AS years ago, if I had found a rheumy earlier than 2011.
