I learned how to do my methotrexate shot at the doctor's office this afternoon. My doc seemed surprised that I had never used a syringe or handled needles before!!!

It went very well - the biggest challenge was how complicated it seemed. So many steps to remember. I'm sure it'll seem like second nature soon but I kept thinking how am I going to remember all this.

The actual injection part was really easy - just poked the needle in without really thinking about it. It didn't even hurt to my surprise. So all I think I have to get my head around is the preparation steps.

What made it a bit more challenging was that I had my five year old granddaughter with me. She didn't want to stay in the waiting room so I explained that I was going to learn how to give myself a shot and she could come in and watch if she wanted. Unfortunately, the clinic was running late so we'd already had to wait about 40 minutes before I saw my doctor. So she was a bit fed up and getting a little antsy. She was kind of hopping around in the background while I was following my doc's instructions.

I asked her afterwards what she thought about it and she said she didn't watch me poke myself because "it was scary".

Anyway, I'm a bit relieved that I've had my first run at it. I'll have another practice next week with the doctor and then should be able to do it at home without help.

You are brave. No way could I, would I give myself an injection. No way. End of story. I loathe needles - horrible. I can watch operations, no probs - except that first incision is always a bit daunting, otherwise a doddle, but needles? No.

Good for you Wendy. That, plus with an antsy 5yr old in the background...phew. You'll be an old habd at this sooner than ya think gal 'smile'.

Hope this works out for you and relieves the nausea aspect of the MTX. hugss

On having the little one with you....I used to have to take my youngest with me to doc visits. Anytime I had to have blood drawn, he sat with rapt attention to the details. Once he saw me have blood drawn without me screaming in pain, he was okay to have his own drawn without a peep. laugh2

I was surprised, Molly, by how easy it was. But also surprised at how complicated prepping the injection seemed - all that keeping everything sterile, getting rid of air bubbles etc.

I was hoping that was how it would be for Sennen. I was very calm and cheerful and hoped she'd lose her fear so it was a bit disappointing to hear her say she didn't want to watch because it was too scary. There was a tiny pinprick of blood afterwards that she was very concerned about! Then all the way home she wanted to tell me about the times she was bleeding!

She is a cutie - I think I posted a photo of her and my other two granddaughters at Christmas but I can't remember which forum.

Congrats! cheerleader
I agree, the prep is kind of intimidating. But if I do all the steps in the same way each time, then I'm comforted that the injection will be successful, and so far, so good.
I'll be having one tonight.

How is your nausea? Is it getting better?
I hope it is getting better.

I'm feeling a wee bit better.

Take care,
Sheri

Thanks again for posting your progress with this Wendy...as soon as you reported good success with it, I called my rheumy and it was called Monday, Walgreen's says it should be in tomorrow...and it's only $2 more than the oral MTX...I'm thrilled at the prospect of not having to deal with this anymore, 'twas making my life h@##...the way it was yours, you're my hero of the week!! grin

I really hope it works for you Michelle. My supply of syringes, needles, prep pads and a sharps container arrived yesterday so I'm all set to do it myself at home on Friday.

Hi Wendy,
So this is where you put your MTX post. I was looking around and couldn't find it at first. smile

Injecting yourself gets easier to do each time you do it. I try to go slow with the poking, but not too slow. For me it seems that going too slow makes it harder to get it over with, and sometimes it makes it hurt more in the process. I'm not brave enough to do it quickly either, so that isn't going to work for me lol.

As you already know I have started up on MTX injections too. I didn't get an appointment to teach me how to do the injections this time, because I used to take MTX injections before, plus I have a little bit of experience elsewhere (enbrel). I think I could have used an extra appointment to remind me how to do it though, just to refresh my memory. It didn't help any when my prescription is in milliliters but they gave me cubic centimeter syringes to use, so I had to use the power of the internet to convert my dosage into cc's. Reading your replies to me has helped alot too.

I told myself not to say anything this early because I have a bad habit of jinxing myself, but I think the MTX is actually helping. My stubborn psoriasis on my hands looks like it is finally starting to clear up more than it ever has. I'm still about as stiff and sore as usual, but I think it is knocking down the heavier amounts of inflammation, like the swelling in my knee. So far I've had 2 injections (1cc then 20cc) of MTX with no reactions so far. Next week I'll start my full dose of 40cc (.4ml).

Good luck on the Methotrexate,
Take care,
James

I am so glad it helped with the nausea. That seems to be the biggest complaint I have read about MTX.
