For those who have had an injection of this...how long did it take to work, how well did it work and how long did the good effect last?

Went to rheumy 2 days ago, whined and complained about how much ground I've lost to being on, off, on, and off mtx over the 4 months I've been taking it. He offered a shot and I took him up on it. 160mg depo-medrol. He said it would tide me over till I could get back on the mtx and could cut the inflammation in the sinus area, too. I do feel better and wonder if it will last long.

I know it's the same stuff as the medrol dose-pak taper, but injecting it is different for me. I know it's oil-based and stays in the tissues longer.

Yes, it lasts much longer than the regular injections. It definitely is a long acting drug. I can tell a difference also when I do a Medrol taper (pills) over a Pred taper. I love the Medrol tapers because I feel so much better or a longer period of time. I truly don't remember how long the shots lasted because it has been quite a while. Just enjoy the time of feeling better. I always got rather aggravated when I realized it was wearing off. :o)

Thanks, Possi. One more morning of not having to run for the Lortab bottle after waking up. And the ugly patch of rash on my elbow has nearly gone away, too. And the sinuses feel somewhat better....wonder drug!

can i ask how this differs from cortisone injections right in a joint where it mostly affects that joint (or so i am told)? how does the depo medrol injection affect the whole body and the cortisone injections i've been getting (only 4 total over 11 years) have only local affects? just a curiosity question really.

It was intramuscular....systemic, rather than located in just one joint. It was a big shot, there is still a localized thickness at the injection site. A bit sore, but not as bad as the pain it was to relieve. I hope it lasts long enough to get the mtx started back and up to baseline again. Didn't seem to work as fast as the oral kind, but maybe that means it will last longer.

From what the doc told me, it will last longer than the oral kind. Since it will wear off gradually, it must gain action a little more gradually. Since it's systemic, probably affects the adrenals more than a single joint shot would.

Actually, I don't know if a joint shot affects the adrenals at all...steroid remains in the joint, most likely. I know the bursa shots in my hips didn't do anything systemically, nor would they effect the osteoporosis, so said the orthopedic guy who did them.

(depo in the name refers to a deposit of drug in the tissues--oily base that isn't broken down easily-similar to vaccines?)

thanks, now wondering how the one shot into the joint stays in the joint and the one you got travels throughout the body? i do know shortly after getting the SI cortisone injections that my WBC count went up, so some systemic effect, but yes, have always been told local cortisone stays local, now just wondering how that shot stays local and yours travels? could look it up and try to figure it out if i were that motivated, but i guess i'm not. just hope it helps you! as for how long it lasts, even the local shot seems to last for quite a while.
