Hey Ben - great idea !!!!!!!!!!!!

A chocolate Stanley Cup.
Now the leaf fans among us will be saying really smarty pants things like " that's the only cup we are going to get " but they are so wrong - we will have both !!!!!!

I believe that Lord Stanley was the Governer General of Canada when he donated the Stanley Cup for hockey. The cup was first awarded in 1893

Maggie

The Stanley Cup

It all started on March 18, 1892, at a dinner of the Ottawa Amateur Athletic Association. Lord Kilcoursie, a player on the Ottawa Rebels hockey club from Government House, delivered the following message on behalf of Lord Stanley, the Earl of Preston and Governor General of Canada:
"I have for some time been thinking that it would be a good thing if there were a challenge cup which should be held from year to year by the champion hockey team in the Dominion (of Canada).
"There does not appear to be any such outward sign of a championship at present, and considering the general interest which matches now elicit, and the importance of having the game played fairly and under rules generally recognized, I am willing to give a cup which shall be held from year to year by the winning team."

The Stanley Cup was originally known as the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup
Shortly thereafter, Lord Stanley purchased a silver cup measuring 7 ½ inches high by 11 ½ inches across for the sum of 10 guineas (approximately $50); appointed two Ottawa gentlemen, Sheriff John Sweetland and Philip D. Ross, as trustees of that cup; and set the following preliminary conditions to govern the annual competition:
• The winners to return the Cup in good order when required by the trustees in order that it may be handed over to any other team which may win it.
• Each winning team to have the club name and year engraved on a silver ring fitted on the Cup.
• The Cup to remain a challenge competition and not the property of any one team, even if won more than once.
• The trustees to maintain absolute authority in all situations or disputes over the winner of the Cup.
• A substitute trustee to be named in the event that one of the existing trustees drops out.
The first winner of the Stanley Cup was the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) hockey club, champions of the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada for 1893. Ironically, Lord Stanley never witnessed a championship game nor attended a presentation of his trophy, having returned to his native England in the midst of the 1893 season. Nevertheless, the quest for his trophy has become one of the world's most prestigious sporting competitions.

The Stanley Cup was originally known as the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup.

I thought I might share that information with the Sens fans because even though we haven't won it since 1967, (gasp), Ottawa hasnt' won it since 1927!! Now don't go into the whole thing about there not being a team there, we can all come up with excuses. Remember Ballard? We're still trying to recover from him and Cliff Fletcher. Ballard would get rid of anyone who was either bit decent because they would want a raise in pay, and Fletcher gave up the farm for aging veterans hoping to take it all. Oh well, we are having a pretty decent year and I'm going to enjoy it in case there isn't any NHL hockey for a while after this season.

As it was, I believe Montreal never really played a series to win it the first year the cup was given out. The team they were supposed to play couldn't make it and the cup was just handed to Montreal. I'll ask you what I ask all the other Habs fans, has the Stanley Cup not been won by another team since '93? It doesn't matter how long it's been since it was last won by either team, the question is who has the best chance of winning it this year? I'll give you a clue, it's not Montreal.

Pittsburgh? Um, Chicago? It can't be Ottawa because they'll have to beat Colorado or Vancouver IF, and that is a huge if, they make it to the finals. There are a lot of teams out there who are one or two players away from being serious contenders, and that's what worries me. If teams stayed the way they are now I'd say Toronto and Ottawa have a legit chance, but a trade or two could knock us both out or make us the teams to beat. We'll know after the trade deadline passes. I'm alway so nervous this time of year.

I agree. I think the best thing Montreal has done is hire Gainey. If anyone can get Montreal over the top it's him. You have a lot of great young players, something we here in Leafland wish we had, and when Theodore finds his confidence again he'll be the great goalie he should be. Montreal is really coming on and if they make the playoffs could be a surprise. I hope they do make the playoffs, the more Canadian teams we can get in there the better chance we have of bringing the cup home. Right here in Canada.
