I am by no means an anti-vaxer and I don't normally know any more than anyone else. This is an abnormal situation and I have some confidence that the current proposed vaccination could first do some harm! One aspect of COVID, an engineered viral agent, is to promote inflammation: Apparently administration of the vaccine will also cause some severe inflammation, especially in people who are prone to this. My own preference is to continue avoidance and use supplemental agents I have mentioned. Also, nearly all of us are eligible to take Plaquenil; I have been doing this for prophylaxis for over a month, increasing my vitD, vitC, zinc, and I use chaga also. I am sorry that I do not have a better opinion of the first approved vaccine, but just from an abundance of caution, I will wait-and-see! More than one source has suggested the inflammatory issue and I want to encourage my fellow spondys and similar (Crohn's, RA, SLE, etc) who battle inflammation to exercise some restraint; wait for the next generation! Just an opinion, for what it's worth.

Now going off to get shingles vaccination!

John

Interesting John, I have wondered about the vaccines for us as well. Its going to require a lot of data before I take a vaccine.

About the Plaquenil, does it help very much with typical AS back pain, and other joints?

What is your take of the alleged heart risks for this drug?

Hey, sBrian:

The beneficial effects of Plaquenil in AS are not that well documented; it has been passed over for the biologic and other drugs. In combination with other therapies and drug regimens, I am enthusiastic about Plaquenil in reducing overall inflammation. It is typically used in such a small dose that side effects are minimal. There are no reports about heart complications and in fact the four or five ways AS damages our hearts is mitigated by Plaquenil. In higher dosages, there is some risk of eye complications, and while taking it is good to be examined every six months by an ophthalmologist familiar with AS.

I'm torn. Like Smed, I am concerned about the lasting effects of Covid-19. Like Dragonslayer, I am concerned about rushing out to a vaccine before it's been properly proved safe.

I'm on a TNF-a inhibitor, like so many of us. That may help to prevent the worst inflammatory effects - certainly, we may be protected against the cytokine storm that they are seeing in some patients.

But it's all so new, and the jury is still out on so much of this. Staying home. Staying safe. Wearing a facemask and distancing as much as possible when out. My sweetheart is shielded, so we're really careful.

Warm hugs,

Kat
